Over three unforgettable days, she uncovered the hidden gems of both cities and discovered what makes HX Expedition Cruises stand out from the rest.

Melissa shares her firsthand experiences and insights to help you make the most of your own adventure.

Vancouver: A Blend of Nature and City Life

Vancouver is a city that perfectly balances the beauty of nature with urban sophistication. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the convenience of the city’s public transit. The SkyTrain/Canada Line made getting around easy and stress-free, connecting me to the heart of the city in no time.

During my stay, I checked into the Sheraton Vancouver Airport in Richmond, which was just a short shuttle ride from the airport. It was the perfect base, with a peaceful courtyard and a small pool to relax by after a day of sightseeing. The hotel’s location was ideal for foodies, with a variety of dining options nearby, and public transit right outside the door made it easy to explore.

One of the first places I visited was Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. The entry fee is a bit steep ($75 CAD), but it’s worth every penny for the immersive experience in the lush Northwest nature. Beyond the iconic bridge, there are treetop adventures and stunning views that make it a must-visit for nature lovers.

Another highlight was Stanley Park. This urban park is a free gem with totem poles, scenic trails, and a peaceful atmosphere. I also spent time at the Vancouver Aquarium, which focuses on animal conservation and impressively ended whale and dolphin captivity. It was heartening to see how committed the aquarium is to preserving wildlife.

Granville Island was another stop on my list, a vibrant spot with a Farmers Market, craft breweries, and plenty of shops and restaurants to explore. The walk from Stanley Park through English Bay to get there made the experience even more enjoyable.

Gastown is a charming neighborhood with historic streets, cobblestone alleys, and the iconic steam clock, making it a delightful place to explore. The area exudes a unique energy, with vibrant shops, cafes, and art galleries. However, like many urban centers, Gastown also faces some challenges, with visible signs of homelessness in certain areas. While these realities exist, they don’t take away from the overall charm and character of this historic district, which remains a must-see in Vancouver. .

Seattle: Quirky and Eclectic

Seattle is a city full of character, with an energy that feels different from Vancouver’s more laid-back vibe. The city’s public transit made exploring a breeze. The buses were reliable, affordable, and offered an easy way to get around.

I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Southcenter in Tukwila, which offered a dependable airport shuttle and easy access to public transit. It’s not in the downtown core, but it’s close to shopping and dining options, and the one-bus route to downtown Seattle made sightseeing hassle-free.

My first stop was the Space Needle—Seattle’s iconic landmark. The Monorail made it simple to get there, and the surrounding area was buzzing with energy. For a more lighthearted experience, I visited the Museum of Illusions—a fun, interactive museum that’s perfect for visitors of all ages.

No trip to Seattle is complete without a visit to the iconic Pike Place Market. While it can get quite crowded, the lively atmosphere is part of its charm. Just around the corner, the quirky Gum Wall offers a fun and unexpected twist, making it a memorable part of the experience!

Aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen: Sustainable Adventure

The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly my time aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen with HX Expedition Cruises. HX is known for its commitment to sustainability and science-driven exploration, and this cruise didn’t disappoint.

The experience began with an emphasis on sustainability. HX has banned single-use plastics, sources locally, and operates hybrid-powered ships that reduce carbon emissions by over 20%. Onboard, the Science Center offered fascinating lectures and microscopes to deepen our understanding of the local flora and fauna. We even participated in a beach clean-up, which was an incredible way to give back while learning about the ecosystem.

Dining aboard the ship exceeded expectations, with high-quality meals served in a minimalist yet luxurious Scandinavian-inspired setting.

One of the standout moments was the zodiac boat adventure, where we ventured out to explore the shoreline. Our guide shared insights about the local environment, making the experience both educational and awe-inspiring.

If you're seeking a meaningful, eco-conscious adventure, HX Expedition Cruises is the perfect choice. The combination of sustainability, science, and immersive exploration makes it an ideal option for travelers who want to go beyond the typical tourist experience.
